Plans underway for Huddleston Hustle 5K and Kids Fun Run

Runners of all ages are invited to participate in the second annual Huddleston Hustle, formerly known as Run for Alex, sponsored by Huddleston Elementary April 19.

The race changed names this year to alleviate confusion regarding the recipient of profits from the event. The run is in memory of Alex Sudduth, who lost his fight against Leukemia in April 2001. He was in the second grade at Huddleston where his mother, Stephanie, teacheskindergarten/first grade.

"A lot of people thought the proceeds went to my son's fight against Leukemia," said Stephanie. "We want people to know that proceeds from the race go to the school Alex attended while he battled his disease."

Last year over $4,500 went directly to the media center to purchase books for the school. Each book had a stamp on the inside that said "In memory of Alex Sudduth" so that students and parents would know that these books came as a direct result of the race.

The school promises that the race will be just as fun as last year with music, entertainment, food and drink. In order to get students at Huddleston excited about the event, a school-wide art contest is taking place where the winner will have his or her artwork printed on the official 2003 race T-shirt that will be given to each racer who registers. Initially, a panel will narrow the artwork down to three selections and the students will take a vote to determine the winning creation.

Race day activities will kick-off at 8 a.m. with the Kids Fun Run immediately followed by the adult 5K. The 5K route is the Peachtree City Classic's Women's route with the start and finish at Huddleston Elementary. Proceeds from the race will be used to purchase books for the school's media center.

Registration fees for the 5K race are $15 before April 5 and $20 afterward. The Kids Fun Run is $10. People who would like to support Huddleston but will not be available on race day can still do so by becoming a Phantom Racer for $20. Participants will not be registered as runners but they will receive a T-shirt by mail following the race.

Registration for the Phantom Racer must be done by mail and received by April 5.

Applications for the race can be obtained online by emailing lisa_aultman@yahoo.com or visiting www.active.com. Forms can also be picked up at any metro Atlanta Athlete's Foot or the front office of Huddleston Elementary.

According to race organizers, response for sponsorship has been tremendous this year with such businesses taking part as Attina's Music Store, Trinity Heating and Air, Pascal's Bistro, Peachtree City Eye Center, Precision Electronics, Karen's Monogram Creations, L & L Music Entertainment and Reebok. Anyone who is interested in being a sponsor for this year's event can contact Sudduth at sudduth.stephanie@fcboe.org.
