Peeples Elementary celebrates Black History MonthIn honor of Black History Month, Peeples Elementary School in Fayetteville hosted StoryTellers of the American Frontier Feb. 11. The StoryTellers programs are presented in schools all over the country at the elementary, middle and high school level. The programs are educational, exciting and carry a moral message of character, integrity, honesty and hard work. All of the stories told were true and were delivered by Master StoryTeller Calvin Sims, dressed in authentic period garb. Peeples' students in grades K-5 delighted in the stories Mr. Sims told with pride and a contagious enthusiasm that proved that history can be fun as well as enriching. The students heard stories about real Western men and women brought to life in an exciting journey back in time with a sensational twist. These heroes of old were black, Indian, Mexican, and Asian. "We bring these African American heroes alive before the students in a format that they will never forget. They will learn of the struggle, the sacrifice and the adversity, but they will come away with a valuable lesson in courage, persistence and honor," said Sims. "StoryTellers engages this captivating effect that anything Western has upon young and old alike. Our strong and powerful images leave a lasting impression and a desire to learn more, to be more responsible and to believe in one's self," he added. In addition to the guest speaker, students at Peeples Elementary are also celebrating Black History Month with various projects and activities in the classroom.
