County puts the brakes on rezonings By JOHN
THOMPSON The Coweta County Board of Commissioners decided Tuesday night to step back and take an overview of the development going on in the county. By a unanimous vote, the County Commission decided to study the growth, zoning issues and land use planning for six months. During the study time, new building permits and zoning applications would not be considered. The study suggestion was brought before the board by Commissioner Greg Tarbutton. An interesting clause in the vote was the study period will be deactivated in 30 days if municipalities in the county don't agree to also examine their zoning issues. Tarbutton stated that the county and its cities need the six month time period to jointly study zoning and land use issues, an area of concern raised at the recent Intergovernmental Retreat. The study period is designed to give municipal and county planners time to look at zoning and land use issues jointly with the goal of having common solutions and goals for these issues. Commissioner Vernon "Mutt" Hunter agreed with the motion, but is not so sure the county's cities will go along with the idea. The last time the county called a halt on zoning applications was in 1997, when the county increased the lot size to 1.6 acres. Hunter doesn't believe that's the motive behind this study. "I'd love to see two-acre lots, but that's not going to happen. It's fine to examine the issue, but there is no specific issue for this study," he said.
