Wicker honored by state organizationLucy Wicker, an art teacher at Peeples Elementary School, has been selected by the Georgia Art Education Association to receive the Youth Art Month Continuing Participation Award, which recognizes art teachers who have participated in Youth Art Month activities in an extraordinary way during the past several years and have documented those activites. According to Kirby Meng, Georgia Youth Art Month co-chair, the month of March is recognized as Youth Art Month. This national and annual observance to show support for quality art education programs is sponsored by the Council for Art Education and the National Art Education Association and has been observed nationally for more than 40 years in schools from kindergarten through college. Rosanne Stutts, president of the Georgia Art Education Association, states that the purpose of Youth Art Month is to direct attention to the value of art education, which develops divergent and critical thinking skills, multicultural awareness, and technical, communication and expressive skills. YAM activities also promote increased community, business and governmental support for art education and recognition of art as a necessity for the full development of a better quality for all people. The observance of YAM helps to expand an interest in art and art education through involvement in art exhibits, workshops, and other creative ventures. Youth Art Month encourages a commitment to the arts by students, community organizations and individuals everywhere, and helps in the recognition of art education as a viable component of the total education curriculum that develops citizens of a global society. GAEA's membership includes elementary, secondary and college-level art educators in public and private schools, as well as museum educators. It is the purpose of the Georgia Art Education Association to promote and maintain the highest possible degree of quality instruction in visual arts programs throughout the state. The GAEA is unified with the National Art Education Association, the largest professional association of art educators in the country.
