PTC makes room for bigger SUVs on road, driveway

To usher the larger, heavier sport utility vehicles into legality, the City Council of Peachtree City has approved an ordinance to increase the weight restriction on automobiles that can be parked along the street and in residential driveways.

The former limit of 7,000 pounds was upped to 8,600 pounds but the length will be restricted to 20 feet "to accommodate the most popular" SUVs, according to City Engineer Troy Besseche.

The ordinance was designed to keep commercial vehicles from encroaching in residential neighborhoods and to keep large vehicles from parking on the street for safety reasons since they interfere with other drivers' line of sight, Besseche noted.

"We believe the changes to the ordinance would be keeping with the intent of the law and are necessary because of the changes in the automobile industry," Besseche said in a memo to the city council.
