'CIA' to make debut in Coweta County

One of the biggest agreements that came out of last week's government retreat in Athens is the formation of a new intergovernmental coalition.

Dubbed the CIA, or Coweta Intergovernmental Association, the new group was formed after numerous leaders at the retreat said the communication efforts between local governments needed to be improved.

Coweta County Commission chairman Leigh Schlumper, who helped organize the retreat, said the local government leaders need to work closer together.

"We have a bigger obligation to support each other," she said.

County Commissioner Robert Wood has advocated an intergovernmental agreement for years and said there is nothing the leaders can do to stop people from coming to Coweta County, but they can help manage the growth.

Wood also said the leaders need to focus on consolidating some services, and then possibly governments.

The new group will feature one member from each government in the county, and will probably meet once a month. No initial meeting date has been set yet.
