Building Dept. recognized top builders

Each year, the Peachtree City Building Department recognizes local builders for outstanding achievement during the preceding year. The 2002 awards of recognition were presented to the following:

Builder of the Year Bill Gibson, Georgia Classic Homes.

Superintendent of the Year Jim Davis, T. D. Farrell Construction, Inc.

Best Commercial Site T.D. Farrell Construction, Inc., Home Depot/Wal-Mart.

Job Site Safety Richard Simms, Richard Simms Homes.

Bill Gibson started his building and developing career in 1985, developing several subdivisions in Fayette and Spalding counties. He used his time between subdivision developments as a custom builder throughout Fayette County. He began to develop in Peachtree City in 1990 with Smokerise Estates Subdivision. While completing four phases of Smokerise Estates, he also built many of the homes in the subdivision.

His latest development in Peachtree City is Ashton Park, a 30-lot, upscale all brick cluster community located on the south end of Robinson Road. He is currently building full-time in Ashton Park with eleven homes completed to date.

He has been a member of the Home Builders Association since 1987. He currently resides in Peachtree City with his wife Sharon, daughter Ashley and sons Brian, Justin, Trey and Grant.

Jim Davis has 27 years of experience in the commercial construction industry, including 24 years as a superintendent. He has worked in a total of 14 states, building many different types of commercial facilities. He has worked with T.D. Farrell Construction, Inc. of Alpharetta since 1998.

Taking a great deal of pride in his job and always striving to construct a high-quality building, he is proud of the Home Depot and Wal-Mart site in Peachtree City and enjoyed working in a city that takes pride in its developments.

A long time resident of Leesburg, he has been married to his wife, Earline, for 37 years and they have two grown children and four grandchildren.

T.D. Farrell Construction, Inc. is headquartered in Alpharetta, GA and was founded in 1998 by Tim Farrell, formerly Executive Vice President for another major commercial construction company in Atlanta. The company specializes in retail and warehouse/distribution facility work and was ranked 94th in the latest Atlanta Business Chronicle's list of "Atlanta's 100 Top Private Companies."

Currently qualified to build in 33 states, the company has completed work in 17 states for such major retailers as Home Depot, Wal-Mart, Kmart, Best Buy, Office Depot, Rooms To Go and several others. Also on the client list are major developers such as the Sembler Company for which Henry Town Center, an 800,000 sq. ft. shopping center in McDonough, was recently completed.

Other recent Atlanta area projects of note include The Home Depot site and building and the Wal-Mart site work in Peachtree City, The Home Depot in Dawsonville and an $8 million renovation and site improvement project at the Kmart Distribution Center in Newnan. Ground breaking for a new Home Depot facility in Suwanee was scheduled for the first of this year.

The company has grown every year of its existence and has completed $101 million of work in fiscal 2002. Future growth will come from existing and new clients but will remain focused on the retail and distribution/warehouse facility niche.

Richard Simms Homes has been building new homes in the Peachtree City and the Fayette County area for over 15 years. It has also been named Builder of the Year by both Peachtree City and the Midwest Georgia Homebuilders Association. Simms serves on the Board of Directors of the local, state and National Association of Homebuilders.

This award recognizes the company's strong and consistent emphasis on job safety and the prevention of job site accidents. This is the second time the company has received the award.

"We think that outstanding achievement should receive recognition, and these building professionals have actively worked to excel in construction quality and jobsite safety," said Peachtree City building official Tom Carty. "Each of these firms has been excellent to work with over the past year."

The Builder of the Year Awards is an annual event, and awardees are selected by the members of Peachtree City's Developmental Services Division who deal with the various stages of development and construction.

Carty and Peachtree City Mayor Brown presented the awards at the Jan. 19 City Council meeting.
