Olympians bring home medals

For the first time ever Special Olympic athletes competed in Alpine skiing Feb. 2-5 in Boone, N.C., and several Fayette students were there to bring home the gold, silver and bronze.

Jasmine Herring of Oak Grove Elementary and Jon Munson of Flat Rock Middle both placed first in their divisions and received a gold medal. Elena Dukes, also of Flat Rock, placed second and was awarded the silver medal. Alex Simmons of Fayette County High placed third, winning the bronze medal.

Additionally, Simmons was also selected from the state of Georgia as the Spirit of Olympics recipient for 2003. This award is given to the athlete who displays a true spirit of the games.

Students from Fayette also competed in the Georgia Winter Games in Cobb County last month. The following students were awarded medals or ribbons during the competition: (Fayette County High) Lillian Nansamba, rhythmic gymnastics; Alex Simmons, Amber Tino, Annetta Menefee, and Soren Wilkins, bowling; (McIntosh High) Eddie Griffin and Josh Vogler, bowling; (J.C. Booth Middle) Sydney Brown and Allison Romano, bowling; (Flat Rock Middle) Kirsten Simon and Jonathan Laughlin, basketball skills; (Fayette Middle) Cory Lamonde and Justin Holcombe, basketball skills; (Oak Grove Elementary) Jasmine Herring, basketball skills; (Whitewater Middle) Ryan Hollandsworth, basketball skills.

"These kids are doing a great job representing Fayette County Special Olympics locally, in state and now in the Southeast Regionals for Alpine skiing," said Barbara Bruce, local coordinator for Fayette County Special Olympics.

The next Special Olympics competition will be held Feb. 24 at the Fayette Bowling Center from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Volunteers are needed to help facilitate the event. Anyone who would like to volunteer is asked to report to the bowling center by 9:30 a.m. on the morning of the competition. Approximately 100 athletes are expected to participate.
