Keeping her promise

Fayette County Board of Education Chairman Terri Smith made good on her campaign promise to give back to the school system by donating $3,000 of her salary to the Fayette County Education Foundation.

The foundation will use Smith's donation to help fund its teacher mini-grant program which provides monetary resources to teachers for the implementation of innovative classroom activities that enhance learning where no other funding is available.

In May 2002, 26 mini-grants were awarded totaling approximately $10,500. The foundation received a total of 51 grant applications last year from teachers totaling $23,000.

Heading into its second year of grant awards, the foundation is expecting an increased number of applications due to budget cuts and an increased awareness of the organization. Teachers can apply for grants in the areas of reading, technology and general academics. Grant recipients are given specific standards and timelines for their projects. Educators receiving funding must submit a written report describing how the funded program enhanced classroom learning.

Grant applications are currently being solicited from teachers for the 2003 awards. Grant requests must be turned into the foundation by February 28 to be considered. It is the goal of the foundation to be able to fund all grant requests this year. However, donations are still needed to help make the goal a reality.

Anyone wishing to make a donation can mail it to the Fayette County Education Foundation, LaFayette Educational Center, 205 LaFayette Avenue, Building D, Fayetteville, GA 30214. For more information, call 770-460-3990, ext. 135. The foundation is a cooperative effort of the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce and the Fayette County Board of Education.
