Fayette counselors recognize National School Counseling Week

The American School Counselor Association recently declared the week of Feb. 3-7 as National School Counseling Week to focus public attention on the unique contributions of professional school counselors within U.S. school systems. The week highlights the tremendous impact that counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career.

"Fayette County has a strong sense of academics. Our motto this year is 'Where Excellence Counts.' Our system knows that in order for students to give their best performances, the whole child needs to be nurtured. Our county guidance department strives to give students both academic and emotional support so they can achieve this goal of excellence," said Sandy Perrin of J.C. Booth Middle, who was named the 2001-2002 Middle School Counselor of the Year by the Fayette County Counselors Association.

School counseling goes beyond helping students explore their abilities, strengths, interests and talents. Counselors also work in partnership with parents to help them sort through the challenges of raising children in today's world as well as focus on positive ways to enhance students' social/personal, educational and career development. Additionally, they work with teachers and other educators to provide an educational system where students can realize their potential and set healthy, realistic and optimistic aspirations for themselves.

Fayette's school counselors achieve these goals by offering numerous services and programs such as classroom guidance, mentoring, tutoring, peer helper programs, support groups and parenting groups.

"Counselors provide the best guidance services possible. We are so fortunate to have the support from our county office and administrators as they understand the importance of serving the whole child," added Perrin.

Each professional school counselors is a certified, experienced educator with a master's degree in guidance and counseling. Fayette has 50 counselors serving over 20,000 students.
