The Fayette County Sheriff's Department's Drug Task Force took out a drug operation at a Fayetteville apartment complex last week that could have had deadly consequences.

When DTF agents raided a unit at the Swanbrook Apartments off East Lanier Avenue, they found an adult who was "cooking" methamphetamine in a process that produces chemicals which could ultimately prove deadly. Two small children were also found inside the apartment and both were at risk of breathing in ill fumes, according to sheriff's officials.

Keith McAlister, 31, was arrested for criminal attempt to manufacture methamphetamine. DTF agents were not sure whether or not the product manufactured by McAlister was distributed locally, said Sgt. Belinda McCastle of the Sheriff's Department.

The investigation began with a citizen's complaint and agents had been working the case for approximately one month, McCastle said.

McCastle declined to reveal the children's relationship with McAlister.
