Scouts looking for food this weekend In coordination with worthy food distribution agencies and pantries, all Flint River Council Scouts will be participating in the annual Scouting for Food Campaign. This Saturday, Feb. 8, Scouts will canvas the neighborhoods and distribute special food bags to homes around Coweta County. The plan is for the scouts to ring the doorbells and ask for contributions for the drive in the form of non-perishable foods. "Peanut butter, macaroni with cheese, tunas along with other assorted vegetables are the items we need, said Cathy Osbourn of the Newnan Salvation Army. "We really appreciate the time and work the scouts do. The food will be given to so many needy families in Coweta." Last year the Coweta scouts collected 9196 pieces/pounds of food. Verna Funk is serving as the Scouting for Food Chairperson for the second year. "The scout participation this year is higher. More Cub Scout Packs and Boy Scout Troops have picked up their Chick-fil-A bags and coupons already," said Funk. "The plan is to increase the county coverage and pack the shelves at the Salvation Army. Some Cub Scouts will be knocking on door this week and going back to pick up the bags Saturday. Cub Scout Pack 50 at White Oak Elementary School will be going out as dens to drop off bags. There are a few more packs doing the same in different areas of Coweta County. Anyone receiving the bags to fill before Friday can pack them and leave them outside at the end of the driveway. This will save the scouts some pick up time, as well as that early Saturday morning visit, Funk said. The Boy Scout Handbook states, "Good Turns are helpful acts of kindness done quietly, without boasting and without expecting rewards or pay. Doing at least every day is a normal part of a scout's life." Saturday happens to fall on the Anniversary of Scouting, which began in 1911. Funk plans on having a scout birthday cake for the helpers that will be dropping off the food to celebrate the Anniversary and this year's "Good Turn."
