Courthouse fire does minimal damage

A small fire on the south side of the Coweta County Courthouse caused minimal damage to the structure Monday afternoon.

The fire started around 2:30 p.m. when a roofing subcontractor working for Choate Construction was using portable propane torches on a flat roof section near the 50-foot level to bend and mould roofing adjacent to the building structure.

Flames from that work blew in under a window on the south side and ignited the sub framing, a small area of dry wood.

On-site fire extinguishers were used until the Newnan Fire Department arrived to completely extinguish the fire.

The building's automatic fire alarm alerted those inside the structure of the situation and the building was evacuated as a precaution. Thermal camera imaging was used by the Newnan Fire Department to ensure that there were no hidden hot spots.

Choate Construction is in charge of ongoing work at the courthouse as part of a stabilization project initiated by the Coweta County Board of Commissioners. The work is scheduled to be completed by the end of this month.
