Prevention and Reversal of Symptoms of Prolapse and Incontinence

Pelvic power for women is a phrase that isn't heard very often. For those suffering with prolapse and incontinence, strengthening the pelvic floor muscles may help in the prevention and reversal of symptoms.

A two-day workshop employing the Feldenkrais Method to address pelvic floor issues will be held locally Feb. 22 and March 2 in Fayetteville. The workshop will be taught by Louise Runyon, a Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner, and is being sponsored by the Durden Chiropractic Clinic.

The pelvic floor muscles are slung like a series of hammocks at the floor of your pelvis, between the pubic bone and tailbone. The pelvic floor muscles can be strengthened by regular exercise and by being held in what is called a "toned" position, according to Runyon.

The Feldenkrais Method combines movement training, gentle touch, and verbal dialogue to help create freer, more-efficient movement. In a series of classes of slow, non-aerobic motions ("Awareness Through Movement"), students "relearn" improved ways their bodies can move. The Method is frequently used to treat stress and tension, to prevent recurring injury, and to help athletes and others improve their balance and coordination.

Four "Awareness Through Movement" lessons will look at movement of the pelvic floor in relationship to movements of the whole body, putting traditional Kegel exercises in a more natural and organic context, and making more sense to the body. The workshop is helpful for prenatal, postnatal, and menopausal women and those involved in sports.

The Pelvic Power class is specifically designed to enhance the function of support for the pelvic organs, enhance the function of the pelvic floor in controlling the outflow of urine and to improve the coordination of the pelvic floor with total body movements so that it is more efficient. One-on-one attention limits the number able to attend the class to a maximum of twenty.

The 2-day workshop will be held Feb. 22 and March 2nd from 24 p.m. in the Group Exercise Room at Gold's Gym Fayetteville on Ga. Highway 85. The cost is $60 for both workshops.
