Workshop explores college/university options
A transition to post-secondary (college/university) options workshop will be held Feb. 3 from 7-9 p.m. in the media center at Starr's Mill High School. The workshop is free and a copy of the Georgia Transition Directory: Post-secondary Options will be available for each participant. The workshop is designed to help parents and educators with guiding young people with disabilities in making the appropriate decisions about post-secondary options. It will provide a brief summary of post-secondary options, provide an overview of the Regents Centers for Learning Disorders, address parent concerns and issues, discuss the application process, distinguish between appropriate and inappropriate accommodations, discuss criteria and support for accommodations, and provide parents and educators with resources on post-secondary options. The featured presenter for the evening will be Nancy Larkin Reed who is currently the liaison/consultant at the Regents Center for Learning Disorders at Georgia State University. She holds a Ph.D. in learning disabilities and a MA in speech-language pathology. Her professional interests include developing efficient methods of providing remediation and strategy training for post-secondary students with learning disabilities. Additionally, a mini-probe fair of the disabilities departments from Georgia colleges and universities will take place from 6-7 p.m. Staff members from the Regents Center for Learning Disorders and Georgia Learning Resources System (GLRS) designed the post-secondary options workshop. For more information, call Amor Kok, Fayette County counselor, at 770-460-3990, ext. 150.
