PTC Council to hear about air show financial report

The Peachtree City Council will review financial statements from the 2003 Great Georgia Air Show at its regular meeting Thursday night.

The show, which was put on by the Dixie Wing of the Commemorative Air Force, had a net loss of $7,820, mainly due to the inclement weather. Heavy rain and thunderstorms one day led to the evacuation of Falcon Field and cancellation of the day's show.

Air show chairman Jerry Cobb will be at the meeting to answer council's questions about the figures.

Last year, council agreed to pay $21,000 for extra police and fire protection at the show, which police and fire officials said was crucial. But the matter was of great debate and Mayor Steve Brown wanted to cut that figure to $10,000, arguing that it would set a precedent for other non-profits to seek money from the city and the air show could raise its ticket prices to cover the cost.

Currently, city policy limits nonprofit groups to receive up to $5,000 every five years, but council made an exception for the air show at a meeting last May.

Councilman Dan Tennant said at that meeting the air show was important because it was popular with local residents and it attracts many others from metro Atlanta to Peachtree City.

Councilman Murray Weed also noted at the time that the air show brings a lot of economic benefit to Peachtree City and that alone justified the city entering into a contract with the air show board to provide the additional public safety personnel needed.

In other business, the council will also discuss a proposal to rezone four properties in the city's industrial park area. City staff are recommending the matter be tabled so the Planning Commission can consider dropping the request because of the high number of property owners that must be notified by the city.

Officials had hoped to rezone the property from general industrial to open space.
