"Two things that would be a shot in the arm for downtown Tyrone would be sewer and liquor by the drink," said Councilman Ray Bogenschutz at the Town Council's annual retreat Saturday in Peachtree City.

While members of the council talked about working on the baseball fields and the cart paths, all of the members were interested in revitalizing the downtown area.

Councilman Mike Smola asked his colleagues what the vision for downtown Tyrone would be for the next 10-15 years and whether or not the council should offer incentives for developing downtown. There has been talk of a new town hall and library in the downtown area and many council members would like to see the area feature small shops and restaurants. Mayor Sheryl Lee stated that she would like to see the older buildings be revitalized.

Bogenschutz explained that Tyrone Elementary School would need sewer service because they will need to expand at some point and can't expand over a septic field.

The council seemed receptive to liquor by the drink. It was even suggested that an Irish pub marking the town's heritage would be suitable. Both sewer and liquor by the drink could be restricted to certain areas of town, Bogenschutz said.

Longtime Councilwoman Lisa Richardson stated that an architectural standard be set for downtown and that things should be done to entice small shops to the area. Town Manager Barry Amos agreed with Richardson stating that the buildings should have to look like buildings of architectural influence along the lines of downtown Fayetteville.

Much like Rome (Italy, not Georgia), downtown Tyrone will not be changed in a day, but the council is looking forward to making downtown Tyrone the true center of town for the community, they indicated.
