Although the Fayette County Commission has signed an agreement to extend TDK Boulevard from Peachtree City into Coweta County, the City Council of Peachtree City has yet to ink the deal.

The project would provide an alternate route for vehicles to enter Peachtree City, which is seen as significant since the project to widen the already vehicle-clogged Ga. Highway 54 West to four lanes should begin this summer. Local business leaders have supported the extension of TDK Boulevard, as has state Sen. Mitch Seabaugh, R-Sharpsburg.

The City Council met Thursday night in a special session in hopes of signing the agreement. But councilman Dan Tennant and Mayor Steve Brown said the document had to be fine-tuned by the attorneys before council could sign.

Meanwhile, an hour later, the Fayette County Commission signed the agreement, which has the county handling construction on the Peachtree City side of Line Creek and Coweta County building its side of the road.

It is likely the agreement will be on the next council meeting, which is slated for Thursday, Feb. 6.

"The essence of the agreement is in place and the spirit of the agreement is done; it's just a matter of lawyering it," Tennant said. "We'll have it signed, sealed and delivered very soon."

While Tennant and Brown didn't go into any details about the agreement, county commission Chairman Greg Dunn said Peachtree City will pay the county $200,000 in two payments over the next two years and let the county manage the project.

At the commission meeting, Coweta County Commissioner Vernon "Mutt" Hunter reiterated his county's full cooperation for the road.

In the Atlanta Regional Commission's long-term transportation plan, the road was not slated to be built until 2025.
