Bids to dredge Lake Peachtree will be opened next month

The Fayette County Water System is expected to open bids Tuesday, Feb. 11, for the dredging of silt from Lake Peachtree.

The system is taking bids from contractors that allow those companies to specify exactly how the work will be done. But if it's necessary, a staging area has been secured at Drake Field for equipment that might be used for the project.

The county water system uses Lake Peachtree as a reservoir and is required to remove silt from the lake bottom periodically.

The project may involve a large number of trucks carrying out the silt and so the water system has agreed to pave an access road to Drake Field off a curb cut to Ga. Highway 54 to allow for a separate truck entrance. That way, the truck traffic won't mix with the other pedestrian traffic through the main entrance to City Hall and the city library.

Estimates call for approximately 22,000 cubic yards of sediment to be removed from the lake, which is owned by Peachtree City.
