Grand jury wants services consolidated By JOHN
THOMPSON Coweta County and its municipalities should try and consolidate some of their local government services. That's one of the findings presented to the Coweta County Commission from this month's grand jury session. In a lengthy list of presentments to the County Commission Tuesday night, the grand jury urged local governments to form a committee to try and streamline their operations. Specifically, the grand jury said the county's fire department could be combined with Newnan's. Other findings included: Urging government officials to educate people on picking a contractor for home repairs. Since there is no license required for general contractors, many examples of fraud have come to the grand jury's attention. Asking local leaders to contact legislators about enacting a felony child endangerment law that would punish parents who neglect their children's needs. Working on better enforcement of silt control issues around the Chattahoochee River. The grand jury said much of the problem is from development north of Coweta County, which has devalued the river. Setting the fees for grand juror and bailiff fees. Recommended fees are $50 a day for jurors and grand jurors and $70 a day for bailiffs in 2004.
