Harold James Pummell


Harold James Pummell, 90, Fayetteville, died Jan. 3, 2003. He was born May 10, 1912 in Boston, Mass. He served in World War II as an ambulance driver for the American Field Service. He retired after 26 years of Federal Civil Service with the Army Materials Command. He was a Master Mason in good standing with the Henry Knox Field Lodge, Alexandria, Va. Services were at the Carl J. Mowell chapel with the Rev. Father Bob Hudak officiating. Interment was at Georgia Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, Milledgeville. Survivors include his wife, Annie Pummell, Fayetteville; children, Robert, John, Katherine, and Susan; and grandchildren, Nicole, Jonathan and Christopher. Memorial donations may be made to the Shriner’s Children's Hospital or your favorite charity. Carl J. Mowell & Son Funeral Home, Fayetteville, was in charge.

Harvey John Kennedy Jr.


Harvey John Kennedy, Jr., 78, Barnesville, died Jan. 4, 2003. He was born April 9, 1924, the son of Harvey and Marisu Kennedy. He graduated from Gordon Military College, and the University of Georgia School of Law. He was in his 55th year of practicing law in Barnesville. He was a captain in the United States Army, 8th Infantry Division, decorated with the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Combat Infantry Badge. He served in the European and Pacific combat in World War II. He was a member of Chi Phi and Delta Theta Phi fraternities; ABA; Georgia Trial Lawyers Association, president in 1968; Towaliga Bar Association, president 2000-2001; American Legion; Moose; (32nd degree Shriner) and amateur radio operator. He served as an Elder in the Barnesville Presbyterian Church and Clerk of the Session. Services were at the Barnesville First Baptist Church with interment at Greenwood Cemetery. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Jean King Kennedy; daughters, Marisu Kennedy, Hadley, N. Y., and Gay and Wayne Robinson, Fayetteville; and grandsons, Preston Robinson, and Brett Robinson, both of Fayetteville. White Columns Funeral Home, Barnesville, was in charge.

Fred W. Benefield


Fred W. “ Freddie” Benefield, 53, Fayetteville, died Jan. 6, 2003. He was born Feb. 17, 1949 in Stockton, Ga. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Mollie Singletary Benefield, and sisters, Dot and Bernice. Services were at the Paulk Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Vernon Hughes officiating. Interment was at Fletcher Cemetery, Alapaha, Ga. Survivors include his wife, Patricia H. Benefield, Fayetteville; a son, Curtis Benefield, Fayetteville; a daughter, Amanda R. Benefield, Powder Springs, Ga.; brothers, Clyde Benefield, Eatonton, Ga., and Don Benefield, Sharpsburg; sisters, Martha Nell Long, and Carolyn Hughes, both of Valdosta, and Bunnie Brown, Marietta, Ga.; and four grandchildren. Carolyn Virginia Noland


Carolyn Virginia Noland, 78, Fayetteville, died Jan. 6, 2003. She was born May 1, 1924 in Meriwether County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wylie Mitchell Noland. Services were at the Jefferson Avenue Baptist Church, East Point, with the Rev. Darwin Caldwell and the Rev. Clarence Jett officiating. Interment was at College Park Cemetery. Survivors include a son, Terry and Diane Noland, Novi, Mich.; a daughter, Kathy Noland, Fayetteville; grandchildren, Scott Noland, and Jennifer Noland; and a brother, Fred and Charlene Newman, Hogansville. Frances A. Ellis Amsrud Pankoff


Frances A. Ellis Amsrud Pankoff, 80, Peachtree City, died Jan. 7, 2003. She was born Jan. 18, 1922 in a farmhouse in southwestern Wisconsin, the youngest of eight children. Her parents were Frank and Elta Ellis. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Richard M. Amsrud. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Platteville, and had a long career as a first grade teacher until her retirement. Memorial services were at the Carl J. Mowell chapel with Vicar Chad Langdon officiating. Survivors include her husband, Paul W. Pankoff, Peachtree City; sons, Paul J. Pankoff, Harrisburg, N. C., Richard and Donna Pankoff, and Robert and Linda Pankoff, all of Racine, Wis.; a daughter, Susan Amsrud and Marty Skorstad, Peachtree City; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Maudie Mae Black


Maudie Mae Black, 78, Fayetteville, died Dec. 30, 2002. She was born April 22, 1926 in Atlanta. Services were at the Higgins Funeral Home chapel with interment at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, College Park. Survivors include a son, Charlie Black; and daughters, Gracie Kelley, Sara Turner, Loretta Kilgore, and Patricia Brumbelow. Higgins at Holly Hill, Fairburn, was in charge.

Jewell Glover Howell


Jewell Glover Howell, 76, Fayetteville, died Jan. 7, 2003. She was born June 6, 1926 in Fulton County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Englin Howell Jr. Services were at the Carl J. Mowell chapel with the Rev. Dennis Watson officiating. Survivors include daughters, Joyce and Terry Strand, Melbourne, Fla., Janet and David Winzeler, and Jill and James Gleason, all of Fayetteville; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. James Leonard Sims Sr.


James Leonard Sims Sr., 81, East Point, died Jan. 8, 2003. He was born Dec. 21, 1921 in Weakley County, Tenn. He attended the University of Tennessee before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps as an aviator. He served as a section leader in one of the most famous Marine Attack Squadrons, VMTB 232, during the battle for Okinawa. He was recalled to active duty during the Korean War as a flight instructor. He worked for Delta Airlines retiring after 38 years as a senior analyst and supervisor in the Flight Analysis group. Services were at the East Point First United Methodist chapel with the Rev. Edward B. Nelson officiating. Interment was at the Screven County Memorial Cemetery. Survivors include sons James L. Sims Jr., Sterrett, Ala., Robert L. Sims, Tehachapi, Calif., and Mark A. Sims, Sylvania, Ga.; a daughter, Lou and Steve Ray, Fayetteville; grandchildren, Steven Ray Jr., Kelly Ray Wolfe, Lauren Ashlee Ray, and Mary Amanda Sims Berkley; great-grandchild, Halee Breann Ray; sisters, Virginia Arnold, and Mary Parish; and sisters-in-law, Ruth P. White, and Catherine Pfeiffer. Carmichael-Hemperley Funeral Home, East Point, was in charge.

 

Mary Wynelle Bray


Mary Wynnelle Bray, 85, Union City, formerly of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., died Jan. 8, 2003, She was born March 1, 1917 in Byronville, Ga. Services were at the Carl J. Mowell chapel. Survivors include a sister, Gladys Scott, Christian City; and a nephew, Lester Scott, Fayetteville. Carl J. Mowell & Son Funeral Home, Fayetteville, was in charge.

 

Keith Keeling Holman


Keith Keeling Holman, 48, Peachtree City, died Jan. 11. 2003. He was born March 28, 1954 in Albion, N. Y. He was preceded in death by his father, William C. Holman. He was a life member of the Peachtree City Volunteer Fire Department and was a reserve sheriff's deputy for Fayette County. Services were at the Peachtree City First Baptist Church with the Rev. Steve Bingham, the Rev. John Weber and the Rev. Dr. Don Smith officiating. Interment was at Camp Memorial Park, Fayetteville. Survivors include his wife, Susan Holman, Peachtree City; a son, Nicholas Holman, Senoia; a daughter, Kathryn Holman, Peachtree City; mother, Louise Holman, Peachtree City; and parents-in-law, Jack and Pat Walls, Roopville.
