Nigro earns Eagle rank

McIntosh High School senior Ryan Nigro has been awarded Eagle rank in the Boy Scouts of America for his accomplishments as a scout in Troop 279 in Peachtree City. He received his award in special ceremonies conducted by Troop 279, sponsored by Holy Trinity Catholic Church.

Nigro, son of Bill and Martha Nigro of Peachtree City, rebuilt 15 flower boxes for the Southland Nursing Home in Peachtree City as his Eagle service project. To demonstrate leadership skills, he organized other scouts and built and painted the boxes.

He is a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist, was elected to the National Honor Society in 2002 at McIntosh, and was named "most intelligent student" by the senior class this year. He lettered in cross-country and participated on the National Science Olympiad team from McIntosh.

Other activities include the youth leadership committee and playing guitar at First Presbyterian Church, working at Chick-fil-A and participating in a mission trip to Juarez, Mexico in June of last year.

"Ryan is an accomplished young man who set his mind to completing his Eagle rank and rallied to accomplish the goal despite the pressures of other activities," said scoutmaster Bob Commerford. Eagle rank must be earned by the time a scout is 18.

Troop 279 was founded six years ago, and Nigro is its seventh scout to achieve Eagle rank. The troop is part of the Sepohaytev District, Flint River Council, Boy Scouts of America.
