PTC police probe fatal shooting at Twiggs Corner

A Peachtree City woman died Saturday of what police are calling a suicide, although the matter is still under investigation.

Deiridre C. Devine, 46, shot twice at a man she knew before killing herself at 34 Twiggs Corner, a condominium community, said Police Chief James Murray. Devine pulled the gun on the man just after he asked her to leave, Murray said.

"He was extremely lucky" not to have been shot, Murray said.

Devine was pronounced dead at Atlanta Medical Center; the witness called 911 after finding her on the floor moments after the shooting, Murray said.

The witness told police that after Devine shot at him twice, he heard her say she was going to kill herself just before firing a third shot, Murray said.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation notified the department Sunday that the cause of death will likely be ruled a suicide, and other evidence also points to suicide, Murray said.

"From all indications at the scene and what has been said, that appears to be the case," Murray said.

The witness had just returned home Saturday morning after telling Devine previously that she could no longer live at the residence, Murray said. When he entered his bedroom, he found a bullet on the floor and then discovered Devine sitting in a closet where she had been drinking and smoking for quite a while, Murray said.

The gun used in the shooting a .380 automatic pistol was owned by the witness, Murray said.

The department is waiting on chemical test results before closing the case, Murray added.
