Brown unsure but upbeat about new authority deal

Although he feels the creation of a sports and entertainment authority to run Peachtree City's tennis center and amphitheater is a step in the right direction, Mayor Steve Brown said he still unsure about the proposed makeup of the new authority.

Brown said Wednesday that he hadn't yet seen the details and was basing his limited opinion on what he had heard. The City Council was slated to discuss the matter at its meeting last night.

"We're definitely going in the right direction: the legal, safe direction," said Brown, who proposed the new authority a year ago.

But the recent plan is the result of work by a committee composed of council members Dan Tennant and Murray Weed along with development authority members Bob Brooks, Doug Warner and Brian Palmitessa. Weed and Brooks said Tuesday the plan addresses the need to have continuity at the tennis center and amphitheater when the operations are turned over to the new authority assuming that's what council votes to do.

The mayor opposes having representatives on the new authority from the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce and the Fayette County Development Authority.

"The Chamber of Commerce is a private special interest group which does not represent this city at all," Brown said, adding that Virgil Christian, the city development authority's executive director, is a Chamber member. Brown pointed out that only two members of the county development authority live in Peachtree City and both are currently on other authorities: Cathy Nelmes of the airport authority and Tate Godfrey of the Development Authority of Peachtree City.

"I don't want duplication," Brown said, adding that he would "reserve judgment until I see the document."
