Council nixes idea of donation to hall of fame

The city of Senoia will not be a sponsor of the Coweta County Sports Hall of Fame.

Despite Mayor Dianne Cleveland's thoughts that it was a worthwhile project, she could not garner the votes to sponsor two former residents, Marvin Duke and John Adcock, into the newly formed hall.

Cleveland said this was the inaugural year for the hall, and the group was seeking $500 from the city to help defray the costs of the hall.

But Councilman Bill Wood said he was concerned about the precedent that would be set.

"I don't see it as a municipal issue," he said.

He also wondered what would happen next year if the hall wanted Senoia to sponsor 10 people.

Cleveland felt that the request was just for the first year, and the Hall would be located on county property.

"Sometimes, the county forgets about the city and I think this would be a good way to improve our relationship," she said.

Councilman Robert Belisle agreed with Wood, while Councilman Bob Hannah sided with Cleveland.

Since Councilman Pat Tunnell was not at the meeting, the issue was deadlocked 2-2 and did not pass.
