Landmark student nominated to compete in national award programMelissa Johnson, a Landmark Christian senior and Peachtree City resident, has been nominated to compete in the National Principals Leadership Award (PLA) scholarship program, sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). Rick Burslem, principal, Landmark Christian School, announced the nomination, which places Johnson in the national competition. One hundred fifty national PLA winners will be chosen this spring to receive $1,000 college scholarships. According to Mr. Burslem, "Melissa in many respects set the bar for this class to which others have not been able to surpass. Her work ethic and intelligence have earned her the right to be number one. Melissa is well rounded and exemplifies the mission of Landmark Christian School in that she has truly become a servant leader." Nominees from across the nation are selected based on their leadership skills, participation in service organizations and clubs, achievements in the arts and sciences, employment experience, and academic record. They are also required to write an essay. In considering both co-curricular activities and academic performance, the PLA scholarship recognizes the importance of a well-rounded education. While at Landmark Christian School, Melissa's achievements have included having the highest GPA in her class of 71 students, captain of the cheerleading squad, Student Body President, National Honor Society Chaplain, GA Girls State (elected Secretary of State), Class President in 11th grade, Beta Club President, and being nominated for National Youth Leadership Conference. She has also enjoyed participating in many community service projects.
