CAP honors cadets, welcomes CollinsCadets and senior members of Peachtree CityFalcon Field Composite Squadron of Civil Air Patrol held their annual Christmas Banquet and Awards Ceremony Dec. 14 in the church hall of Christ's Church in Fayetteville. The evening's ceremonies were opened by the cadet Color Guard's presentation of the National Colors. The cadets then conducted a moving ceremony remembering America's POWs and MIAs. Guest of honor was Congressman and Mrs. Mack Collins (3rd Dist, R). Collins is also one of CAP's own. He holds the grade of lieutenant colonel in the National Capital Wing. As guest speaker, in his remarks, Collins emphasized his admiration for the cadets "who are working hard to become good citizens." Following his speech, Collins joined Georgia Wing Commander Col. Don Greene, Group 3 Commander Lt. Col. Joe L. Knight III, and Squadron Commander Maj. Vince Murray II in presenting awards to squadron members. Collins presented the two most prestigious awards to cadet brothers from Hogansville. Cadet Matt Morgan received the General Billy Mitchell Award and was promoted to Cadet 2nd Lt. His brother, Cadet Tim Morgan, received the Amelia Earhart Award and was promoted to Cadet 1st Lt. The award for Cadet of the Year went to Cadet Maj. John Waters of Peachtree City. 2nd Lt. Janet Mellard of Sharpsburg, a member of CAP for only thirteen months, was recognized as Senior Member of the Year. Civil Air Patrol is the official U. S. Air Force Auxiliary. All CAP members are unpaid volunteers. There are 25,996 cadets and 36,354 senior members nationwide.
