Name change at CCSU

Dr. Sharon E. Hoffman, provost and vice president of Academic Affairs for Clayton College & State University, has announced that the staff of the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia has approved Clayton State's request to change the name of the New

College for Economic and Community Development to the College of Information and Mathematical Sciences (CIMS). The name change is effective immediately.

The New College was originally founded in 1998 as the home for Clayton State's more non-traditional academic programs the Information Technology Career Ladder (ITCL), Integrative Studies and the Bachelor of Applied Science. At the start of the current semester, the New College housed just the ITCL. With the name change, the University's Mathematics Department joins the ITCL in CIMS.

Hoffman has also announced that a search for the Dean of the College of Information and Mathematical Sciences will open immediately. The Search Committee will be chaired by Dr. Lydia McAllister, acting dean of the School of Health Sciences, and will consist of three members each from the Mathematics Department and the New College. The Board of Regents staff has given Clayton State permission to do an internal search to expedite naming of a new dean, with the expectation of the dean coming on board in January or February 2003. The initial dean appointment will be for a three-year period.

In addition, Hoffman said that it is anticipated that, in the future, Clayton State will proceed with plans for additional baccalaureate degrees for CIMS, including an additional undergraduate degree in the computer science area and an undergraduate degree in mathematics.

"We will be pursuing these new degrees to meet the needs of the Southern Crescent and to prepare students for graduate school and for the needs of the business community," said Hoffman.

When Clayton State opens its new University Center this summer, faculty in both the Department of Mathematics and Information Technology will occupy offices on two of the floors of the new building. In addition, the new dean's office will also be in the University Center.
