PTC, Tyrone will be connected by road between two new subdivisions

A developer will be allowed to build a road connecting Peachtree City and Tyrone for two new subdivisions under construction north of Crabapple Lane.

The request to connect the road for the Maple Shade subdivision was approved unanimously by the Peachtree City Council at its meeting Thursday night. The matter has been delayed over questions about whether Tyrone officials had signed off on the plan, but in fact they had previously done so.

Doug Dillard, an attorney representing developer Jimmy Halligan, noted that issues involving response protocol by emergency personnel had been worked out and that the city limits would be clearly marked with signage.

The road will have two stop signs to slow down cut-through traffic that is expected since the subdivision in Peachtree City will be across Crabapple Lane from a new elementary school that's under construction.

Halligan has argued that without the road connection, he would not be able to provide amenities to both sides. A lake will be located in the Tyrone subdivision that will be open to residents from the Peachtree City side. A pool and clubhouse might be in the plans also, but a tennis court has been ruled out, Halligan said.

The planning commissions from both municipalities met several weeks ago to discuss the road connection proposal, and at a later meeting the Peachtree City commission agreed not to oppose the road.

Councilman Dan Tennant said he appreciated Halligan's efforts to accommodate the city's needs.

City Planner David Rast said the two subdivisions would also be connected by golf cart paths. The school system is building a path to connect it to the existing cart path system in the nearby Ardenlee subdivision, Rast added.

Mayor Steve Brown noted a need for the cities and the county governments to meet and develop cohesive regulations for golf cart paths, but only Tyrone has expressed an interest in working on the issue in January.
