Coweta County now has an official tree.

By an almost 2-to-1 margin, the Yellow Poplar was the tree of choice to represent Coweta. A total of 4,451 students voted from Sept. 1-Nov. 15 with 2,362 choosing the Yellow Poplar, 1,243 opting for the Water Oak, and 846 selecting the Sawtooth Oak.

The results of the voting, as well as photos of the winning tree, are posted on the Coweta County Web Site at www.coweta.ga.us.

Coweta County students in grades kindergarten through fifth chose the official tree.

The county's Greenspace Citizen Advisory Committee asked the children of the county to pick the tree and would like for each child to think of "greenspace" as a valuable component of healthy communities.

Each of the trees in the contest is found in Coweta County and contributes to the function of greenspace in our environment. Each tree has special characteristics and unique aesthetic qualities.

Each school that participated receives a tree from the Georgia Forestry Commission or the Greenspace Citizen Advisory Committee.

During the month of February, the Greenspace Citizen Advisory Committee and the Georgia Forestry Commission will schedule tree-planting ceremonies for participating schools located outside of municipal jurisdictions. Home school students are invited to attend the ceremony at the Georgia Youth Science & Technology Center.
