Saturday blood drive nets 18 donors; next one is Monday

A total of 18 units of blood were collected at Saturday's special blood drive for the American Red Cross at The Gathering Place in Peachtree City.

The goal for the drive was actually 25 units, said Marcy Blount of the American Red Cross blood services unit, southern region.

But Peachtree City residents will have a chance to donate again Monday at the regularly scheduled monthly blood drive at The Gathering Place. The Red Cross is hoping to collect approximately 33 units at that drive, Blount said.

Donors can either walk-in or sign up for a particular time by calling 1-800-GIVE-LIFE or on the Internet at www.givelife.org.

The Red Cross typically experiences a holiday shortage of donations at this time of the year because schools are on vacation and businesses often cancel blood drives, officials said. Donors with type O or B blood are especially needed.
