A number of students from the Fayette/Coweta/South Fulton area are recipients of scholarships provided by the Ty Cobb Educational Foundation, including:

Teresa M. Devine of College Park, a physician assistant major at the Medical College of Georgia;

Mark E. Thomas of Senoia, a doctor of medicine student at the Medical College of Georgia;

Laura Dean of Fairburn, a physician assistant major at the Medical College of Georgia;

Audrey Eckles of Brooks, an undecided major at North Georgia College & State University;

Richard Sun Jung of Riverdale, a neuroscience major at the Medical College of Georgia;

Brian M. Varisco of Peachtree City, a doctor of medicine student at the Medical College of Georgia; and,

Angela C. Hayes of Peachtree City, an anthropology major at Valdosta State University.

The students were among 238 Georgia residents who received $563,000 in scholarships for the 2002-2003 academic year.

The Ty Cobb Educational Foundation was established in 1953 by the late Tyrus R. Cobb (1886-1991), a native of Royston, Ga. who was unparalleled as a baseball star for most of his 24-year career in the major leagues. Owner of a .367 lifetime batting average, the first player elected to the Hall of Fame established the scholarship foundation to assist capable and deserving residents of Georgia who need assistance in completing their college education.

Scholarships are granted to undergraduate students beyond the freshman year and to students pursuing degrees in medicine and dentistry. Although grants are for Georgia residents only, a student may attend an accredited college or university in Georgia or another state. Guided by a board of former college and university administrators, most scholarships are awarded for a period of one academic year and may be renewed for one or more additional years.

Students interested in 2003-2004 awards should write the Foundation at P.O. Box 725, Forest Park, Ga. 30298 or communicate via e-mail at tycobb@mindspring.com. Requests will be accepted only between March 10-June 10, 2003.
