PTC Council shifts funds for Hwy. 54 widening projects By JOHN
MUNFORD To help fund approximately $635,000 of capital projects that need immediate attention, the Peachtree City Council has shifted some funds around in its budget. Most of that total $494,943 is related to the widening of Ga. Highway 54 West, and the city hadn't planned to spend most of those funds until next year. But the funds will be needed soon, and the council decided to fund them through its bricks and mortar financing program. Another project included in the final total is the renovation of the Neely Fire Station, a project that has been cut drastically but was still characterized as a necessity by city staff. Council also elected to take the additional $96,000 for the project out of its bricks and mortar program. The total project will cost $296,000, but that price was less than the original estimate from the architect on the project, noted Finance Director Paul Salvatore. The projects related to the highway widening include an additional $229,000 for relocating utilities in the corridor, $105,000 for a grant for culverts at the bridge over the CSX railroad track, $35,000 for bridge enhancements to add a cart path bridge, $60,000 for new traffic signal poles and $50,000 for sidewalks along the highway. The bricks and mortar funds council shifted for the highway projects and Neely station renovations were originally tabbed for several other projects in 2004, including a satellite auto shop facility ($228,750) and the facility buildout plan for the public works building ($234,532). The auto shop facility is crucial since employees are now servicing vehicles such as fire trucks outside in the cold, said Mayor Steve Brown.
