Commission turns down grant

The journey for Odyssey Charter School to open in Coweta County took another turn Tuesday as the Coweta County Commission refused to accept an emergency fund grant for the school.

The $20,000 grant would have helped pay for books, desks and shelving.

But the County Commission decided it was no their place to deal with education funding.

County Administrator Theron Gay said the county has nothing to do with everyday school funding, and the commission agreed it should not set a precedent of accepting grants for school related issues.

Even though Odyssey would be a charter school, it would still operate under many of the rules and regulations of the Coweta County School System.

The County Commission instructed Gay to tell the applicant for the grant to run it through other government agencies, since the commission chose not to administer the funds.
