Sewer system to be finished by 2004

Senoia residents learned Monday night the city's long-awaited sewer system should be up and running in 2004.

City administrator Murray McAfee told the City Council that the city should start taking bids on the system next month and open the bids Jan. 10.

McAfee expects construction to start on the system in April of next year, and anticipates construction to end a year later.

At an earlier meeting this month, Councilman Bill Wood had expressed frustration at the lack of progress in the sewer system and wanted a definitive timeline on when the system would be completed.

City Attorney Drew Whalen said the progress was pretty much in line with projects of this size. He said the longest part of the procedure was obtaining right-of-ways and permits, and then the project would start moving more rapidly.

For more than a year, the city has been working with residents to acquire property to run the sewer lines and build 11 pump stations.

Councilman Robert Hannah thanked McAfee for his timeline, but said he didn't like to see the project five months behind the original schedule.

Phase one of the sewer project, which serviced many of the lower income residents, was completed two years ago.
