Foodie gives thanks

By F.C. FOODIE

Next week officially starts the season of holiday eating. For the next six weeks, we'll be inundated with enough holiday goodies to make us start looking for those Atkins Diet books and hitting the treadmills in January.

But until then, we need to enjoy the camaraderie the holidays bring us and the joy of sharing holiday meals.

Now is traditionally the time to give thanks and reflect on the past year. Without further ado, here are some of the things that Foodie is happy about this year:

Restaurants like City Cafe, Village Cafe and Valentino's. These restaurants have become good friends over the past few years and show that Fayette Countians are willing to support genuine, independent restaurants in the vast expanse of chain restaurant dining.

New restaurants such as The Famous Fish Company, Ted's Montana Grill and Thai Spice. The new wave of upscale restaurants show that business people are starting to realize the demographics in Fayette County and our love of dining out.

Good bread and coffee on a dreary morning. For years, residents moaned over the lack of good, crusty European bread in the area. Now, Atlanta Bread Company, Starbucks and City Cafe offer a taste of the continent to the Southside. My choice for best supermarket bread is Publix.

As war drums keep pounding and Osama still looms over the horizon, let's give thanks for our country this holiday season while we're polishing off the second helping of turkey.
