Golf cart parking lot takes off at McIntosh By JOHN MUNFORD
Almost 130 students are taking advantage of the new golf cart parking lot on campus at McIntosh High School. The lot, which is actually a portion of the regular parking lot that is separated by a sidewalk to prevent the vehicles from intermingling, is linked to the city's cart path system. Students pay $40 for a numbered parking space in the golf cart parking lot which covers administrative costs such as security, said Assistant School Superintendent Stuart Bennett. "I think it's working pretty well," Bennett said. "It was good to take care of the situation." Previously, golf carts weren't allowed on campus and students parked their carts along Prime Point behind the school. But the number of golf carts driven to the school swelled after the Peachtree City City Council agreed to allow 15 year-olds with learners permits to drive golf carts on their own. Bennett said he appreciated the support given by city officials, particularly Mayor Steve Brown. "We really appreciate his support," Bennett said. The cost of installing the 600-foot-long sidewalk was approximately $8,000. Assistant Principal Marc Mickleboro, who is responsible for parking lot operations at McIntosh, said the golf carts are issued stickers identical to those the school issues for automobiles. The stickers are displayed on the windshield of the carts or if there is no windshield, they are put on the front end of the cart. By assigning students a specific parking space, it allows school staff to verify the owner of a particular cart, Mickleboro added. Since students don't park on Prime Point anymore, the school keeps the back gate entrance to the football field and track area locked in the mornings and all day, Mickleboro added, "since there's no need for them to come through."
