Almost 34,000 Fayette voters hit the polls Tuesday as Georgia elected its first Republican governor in over 100 years.

Sonny Perdue outgained incumbent Democrat Roy Barnes 21,655 to 11,377 in Fayette. Elections officials said 33,957 of 52,995 eligible persons voted in Fayette, equal to a 64 percent rate.

Peachtree City teacher Kathy Cox handily won Fayette on her way to securing the state school superintendent seat. Cox outpaced Democratic challenger Barbara Christmas 24,629 to 7,887 in Fayette, while Libertarian candidate Lynn Krogseng got 1,050 votes.

Statewide, Cox totalled 54.3 percent of the vote with 1,081,932 votes to Christmas's 855,029 (42.9 percent) and Krogseng's 56,695 (2.8 percent).

Although Fayette resident Emory Wilkerson won his home county with 9,150 votes to 4,538 for Valencia Seay, his challenger for the State Senate 34th District seat, the district totals came out in Seay's favor once votes from the Clayton County precincts were tallied. Seay won the seat by a margin of 6,351 votes.

Incumbent U.S. Rep Mac Collins won Fayette handily, taking 25,246 votes for the 8th District seat over 6,187 for challenger Angelos Petrakopoulos. Collins won the seat with a district-wide tally of 142,479 compared to Petrakopoulos's 39,410.

Saxby Chambliss, who outpaced Democratic challenger Max Cleland almost two to one in Fayette, won the state with 52.8 percent of the vote.

Although Republican lieutenant governor candidate Steve Stancil won Fayette with 20,057 votes to Democrat Mark Taylor's 12,539, he couldn't sway the entire state, taking just 45.6 percent of the vote while Taylor pulled in 51.8 percent statewide.
