A Hampton man remained in critical condition at Southern Regional Medical Center Thursday after he was seriously injured in a crash on Ga. Highway 85 at the Morning Creek bridge late Monday afternoon.

Steve W. Gosdin, 46, of Hampton, was seriously injured when his 1994 Toyota pickup struck the bridge and catapulted into two other vehicles that were also traveling north on the highway, according to Capt. Bryan Woodie of the Fayette County Sheriff's Department.

The northbound lanes of Hwy. 85 were closed for over two hours Monday afternoon while deputies investigated the three-vehicle crash.

None of the occupants of the other vehicles were injured during the collision, which occurred at approximately 5:11 p.m., Woodie said.

Gosdin was not wearing a safety belt at the time of the crash, Woodie said.

Before the crash, Gosdin passed other northbound traffic using the road's emergency lane, Woodie added.

The investigation into the crash will continue and officials expect to file criminal charges at a later date. A blood sample was taken from all drivers involved to determine if any were under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash, which is standard procedure with all crashes involving serious injuries.
