No condos in Fairburn

Fairburn's leaders said no Monday to a proposed condominium complex just north of Virlyn B. Smith Road.

The development would have placed 68 condos on 14 acres, which city administrator Jim Williams termed too dense for the area.

Resident Robert McCready agreed with Williams.

"This would create an isolated high density pocket. With only one entrance, it would create a fire hazard," he said.

McCready said he had talked to real estate brokers who said neighboring property owners would also see their property values drop 15-20 percent.

Williams said rezoning the property from R-1, which requires one-acre tracts to R-CT3, would create spot zoning in the area and asked the City Council to reject the zoning application.

The council unanimously turned down the application.

The council did approve a rezoning of 148 acres on the east sides of Bohannon Road and Creekwood from AG-1 Agriculture to M-1 Light Industrial.

Robert Jordan, who owns the property with Robert McCamy, wanted the property rezoned to M-2 Heavy Industrial, but the City Council decided a less intensive zoning was appropriate for the area.
