Amendment would create funds for dog, cat sterilization in Ga.

One amendment on Tuesday's general election ballot is aimed at creating a program to prevent dog and cat overpopulation with a statewide sterilization program.

Constitutional Amendment 6, if approved by voters, would allow for funds to be raised by the sale of special license plates for the voluntary program.

Money generated by the sales of the special license plate would help pay for sterilization procedures, provide educational materials about the importance of sterilization and promote sales of the plate.

The Georgia Department of Agriculture will use an existing accounting system to pay licensed veterinarians to perform spay or neuter procedures for dogs and cats.

Organizers say the goal is to reduce the number of animals housed and killed in animal shelters.

The amendment is supported by the Humane Association of Georgia, Inc., the Association of County Commissioners, the Georgia Sheriff's Association and the Georgia Emergency Management Agency, among other groups.
