Waters on the rise with CAP

John D. Waters, 17, of Peachtree City, a senior at Starr's Mill High School, has just been appointed cadet commander of the Peachtree City-Falcon Field Squadron of Civil Air Patrol.

As cadet commander, Waters is responsible for the leadership of some 50 cadets in the unit. Cadet commanders traditionally serve for one year in the number one cadet position. "Only the most motivated and hard-working cadets ever reach this level of leadership," said a squadron spokesperson.

At Starr's Mill High School, Waters is a member of the Beta Club, Class 2003 Executive Board, Future Business Leaders of America and the new Aviation Club. In school athletics Waters participates in cross-country and track.

After school, in addition to his volunteer CAP duties, Waters works on his instrument rating as a private pilot and also runs his own "handyman service." His number-one hobby is flying, he says, but the young pilot also tries to fit in golf and baseball with his friends.

Waters joined Civil Air Patrol, the official auxiliary of the U. S. Air Force, as a new cadet in November 1998, after being introduced to CAP at a "fly-in" at Falcon Field. Since then he has worked his way "up the ladder" of cadet achievements to reach the top cadet leadership position.

Twice Waters served as squadron commander for CAP cadet summer encampments on military bases. The two encampments are his fondest memories of CAP, he states. "All those cadets under you, all those success stories," is what Waters says was so rewarding to himself.

"CAP is a great way to meet new people and to learn to work together. You learn things that help you throughout your life," Waters added.

The young cadet commander states that he is looking forward to a military flying career, starting with the U. S. Naval Academy at Annapolis or an ROTC scholarship, and then on to flight training.

Visitors, both adults and young people, are invited to come see for themselves what CAP is all about. The unit meets every Thursday night from 7-9 p.m. at facilities provided by Heritage Christian Church, 2130 Redwine Rd. For information, call squadron commander Major Vince Murray at 770-719-8814.
