PTC has over $10 million in unbudgeted or underfunded projects for coming years

A number of city projects that are either unbudgeted or underfunded are becoming a significant cause of concern for Peachtree City Mayor Steve Brown.

The list of projects totals over $10 million in unbudgeted funds. The projects range from repairs to city buildings to various improvements to the cart path system such as tunnels and repairs.

Some of these projects have been put off for years, including the estimated $500,000 needed to dredge the Three Ponds area, Brown said.

"We've got to do something about that before it becomes a swamp," Brown said. "You can't keep putting things like that aside, but we've been doing that for years."

Emergency repairs to City Hall that are already underway will cost approximately $175,000. And the city is short by over $426,000 to relocate utility poles for the widening of Ga. Highway 54, Brown said.

That doesn't even count the millions of dollars the city will have to spend to replace storm water infrastructure to meet new state and federal mandates, Brown added. It is possible that the city will create a separate storm water utility to help fund those projects.

As for the other unfunded and underfunded projects, Brown said the city needs to focus on enhancing its revenue streams.

"We've got to do more economic development locally," Brown said. "That's a large revenue for us."

The funding problems can be solved, Brown said, but much depends on the negotiations with Fayette County on the distribution of the local option sales tax, he added.
