Tyrone will double-poll some voters
By

Some voters in Tyrone will need to do a little bit of extra driving to get all of their ballots cast in next Tuesday's elections. Of course, polls across Fayette County will be open for the statewide elections, as citizen decide on offices from governor on down and in various state House and Senate districts. Both county commission races were decided in the primary, and both Board of Education races have unopposed candidates. But there is one seat up for grabs on the Tyrone Town Council, as incumbent Ronnie Cannon faces Mike Smola. While the other municipalities in Fayette have their elected officials serve four-year terms, with some of them elected every odd-numbered year, Tyrone officials still serve two-year terms, which means someone is running every year, according to an official with the county's Election Board, which contracts with all of the municipalities to run their elections. All ballots in the Town Council race will be cast at the First Baptist Church of Tyrone, which is also the county precinct location for most town residents. But some folks in Tyrone go to either Grace Evangelical Church of Hopewell First United Methodist Church to vote for countywide and statewide races, and if those people want to vote for the council as well, it will require two separate trips. Election officials will be present at the Baptist church solely to direct traffic, asking voters as they arrive if they are there for the town election or the county election, as they are in separate areas of the church. Voters in Tyrone wanting to cast absentee ballots will need to specifically request both ballots, election officials said. While the walk-in absentee requests are being handled easily, those who request absentee ballots by mail need to remember to ask for both.
