Health fair Nov. 9

Southeastern Primary Care Specialists in Fayetteville will host its fifth annual health fair Saturday, Nov. 9.

Over the past four years, the health fair has provided a wide range of medical screenings and services in trying to promote a healthier lifestyle for all who attend. This year should be no different.

There will be cholesterol and prostate screenings, mammography, flu shots, and diabetic screenings. There will also be doctors from various specialty fields on hand to answer your specific questions. For those interested in staying healthy, or for anyone needing to "get back on track," the health fair should provide something to meet everyone's needs.

Probably the most important services provided are the various screenings, such as blood pressure checks, diabetic and cholesterol evaluation, and prostate examinations. These types of exams are important because they can detect potential problems even before symptoms begin.

For example, high blood pressure is called "the silent killer" because it may be causing damage to the heart, blood vessels, and kidneys long before any symptom such as headache or chest pain occur. The same holds true for diseases like diabetes and high cholesterol.

Flu shots will also be provide at the health fair. With winter approaching, the flu is an important medical concern. It is especially important in the elderly population and those with chronic illnesses such as diabetes, emphysema, and asthma. These populations are at higher risk for a more serious flu and are strongly encouraged to get a flu shot.

Other services at this year's health fair include bone density exams, which screen for osteoporosis, and mammograms, which can detect early stages of breast cancer.

And anyone with diabetes should stop by to inquire about the diabetes education program that Southeastern Primary Care Specialists provides. This is a comprehensive diabetic education and nutrition program that is recognized by the American Diabetes Association.

All the services are completely free of charge and there will be food and prizes to make this a truly pleasant "trip to the doctor."
