PTC offering free mulch to gardeners Peachtree City is offering free mulch to interested gardeners at its recycling center facility on Rockaway Road. Due to the volume of mulch, the city is not restricting availability to city residents. Mulch is used to help protect plants during the winter months. Fayette County Extension Agent Sheldon Hammond recommends replacing mulch in the fall to help insulate plant roots from cold weather and frost. Hammond recommends placing a three inch layer of mulch on planting beds, and it's also important to add under trees to help the root system. The Peachtree City Recycling Center is open Wednesdays from 1:304:30 p.m. and on Saturdays from 8:30 a.m.4:30 p.m. The Peachtree City Public Works Department provides loading of mulch on the first and third Saturdays of each month. Those who wish to obtain large quantities of mulch may also do so by appointment, and the Public Works Department will provide an operator and loader to assist with this process. To schedule a time, call 770-487-5183, Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
