Airport Authority must prioritize future needs

The Peachtree City Airport Authority faces some tough decisions in the coming months about what major projects should be prioritized.

Should the authority try and lock up a 60-acre tract west of the runway to insure its future growth? What about building hangar sites and infrastructure on the 23-plus acre site southeast of the airport that the authority is purchasing from Peachtree City Holdings, a subsidiary of Pathway Communities?

Or are those projects outweighed by the need for a precision landing system, which would allow corporate customers of the airport to land during inclement weather, which involves purchasing land and easements?

Then there's the project to pave the "overrun" safety area at the end of the runway. Where does that fit in?

There was no easy answer as the authority debated the projects briefly at its meeting last week. The discussion was tabled in anticipation of more information on the projects becoming available in the coming months.

"It's a tough decision," said Airport Manager Jim Savage.

The priority list will be submitted to the Georgia Department of Transportation, but the Federal Aviation Administration also uses the data to determine which of the projects it can fund.

"We really won't know until the end of next year," which projects the FAA will back, Savage said.
