CCSu kicks off theater season with Bradbury musical

The Clayton State Theater, with a professional cast and orchestra, will premiere renown science fiction writer Ray Bradbury's only foray into musical theater, "The Day It Rained Forever" this weekend at 8 p.m.

"The Day It Rained Forever" will be performed in the Clayton State Theatre - room 132 in the University's Arts and Sciences Building. Tickets are $12 and may be reserved by calling 770-961-3460 during regular Monday through Friday business hours, or on-line at www.claytonstatetheater.org. The theater is not able to accept credit cards.

Since its completion 10 years ago, "The Day It Rained Forever" has been previously performed only at Pepperdine University (with a student cast) and at a festival in Scotland. It was then filed away, and has since been performed only in a couple of studio readings in New York.

William Whitefield, who will direct the Clayton State performances, and a senior at Pepperdine University in 1992, originally approached Bradbury with a request - could Whitefield write a musical based on Bradbury's short story "The Day It Rained Forever?"

Impressed by the young man, Bradbury granted Whitefield permission - and then went one better. Bradbury aided in the adaptation.

Now 82, the award-winning Bradbury says, "Live a life in which you cram yourself with all kinds of metaphors, all kinds of activities, and all kinds of love. And take time to laugh -- find something that makes you truly happy -- every day of your life. That is what I have done, from my earliest days..."
