PTC mayor repays city for secretary taking his daughter to golf camp By JOHN
MUNFORD Peachtree City Mayor Steve Brown has repaid the city to compensate for the time a secretary took his daughter to golf camp when he had a conflict with his personal and city schedules. The $8.94 tab, representing the estimated half-hour of time the matter took, seemingly closes the books on the issue, which featured Brown citing himself for violating the ethics ordinance. The incident also became the centerpiece of a court hearing when former mayor Bob Lenox sought to have Brown charged for theft of city services. After that hearing, Fayette County Magistrate Joe Tinsley ruled there was no probable cause for those charges. Brown insisted on convening a separate ethics hearing for the incident although he had been advised by city officials that the matter was so minor it didn't need to be handled that way. The ethics board admonished Brown not to violate the ethics ordinance again and ordered him to reimburse the city for the secretary's time she was away from City Hall. Brown contended that the secretary volunteered to take his daughter to golf camp and he assumed she would use her break time to do so. After former City Manager Jim Basinger notified him of the possible ethics violation, Brown wrote a letter of apology to Peachtree City residents for the lapse in judgement.
