Sitting in driver's lap, standing on cart illegal on PTC paths By JOHN
MUNFORD
Golf cart drivers in Peachtree City have a few new "rules of the road" in addition to the recent change that allows 15-year-olds, in some circumstances, to drive unchaperoned. The new regulations, passed by the city council earlier this month, feature several safety-related rules. One rule forbids anyone from sitting in the driver's lap while the cart is moving. Such sights are somewhat commonplace, however, particularly with parents who are holding young children as they drive along. Also, no one is allowed to stand on the golf cart while it is in operation. Additionally, anyone who has had their drivers license suspended or revoked cannot drive a golf cart on the streets or path system. Council also added language to the existing ordinance so grandparents are allowed to supervise cart drivers ages 12-14. The new regulations for 15-year-old drivers to be unchaperoned requires they have a valid learner's permit. Those drivers can have one unrelated passenger who is at least 15 also, or no more than three immediate family members, which allows them to drive their siblings on the cart. All traffic signs and requirements apply to golf carts on city streets, according to officials.
